Switchable water pump in the new timing belt kit from Bosch enables faster engine warm-up

Electrohydraulic switching unit interrupts the flow of coolant while the engine is heating up

  • Enhanced comfort as vehicle interior warms up faster
  • Potential to save fuel, depending on the operating conditions of the engine
  • Complete timing-belt kit with switchable water pump for smooth assembly in the workshop

Karlsruhe – Once the engine’s been started, it needs to reach operating temperature as quickly as possible, even when it’s cold outside. The switchable water pump in Bosch’s new timing-belt kit shortens the time for the engine to warm up by interrupting the flow of coolant right after the engine starts. This happens by means of an electrohydraulic switching unit, which covers the water pump’s impeller until the engine temperature reaches 60 degrees Celsius. Only then is coolant flow fully restored. When the impeller is covered, the coolant stands still. This allows it to heat up more quickly and shortens the time it takes for the engine to reach operating temperature. As a result, the vehicle interior warms up faster to a comfortable temperature, even in the cold months. This can also save fuel depending on the operating conditions of the engine, such as speed and load condition or external factors such as air pressure and temperature. That’s because the shortened warm-up time reduces the amount of fuel the engine needs in its rich fuel-air mixture. Furthermore, the power released while the water pump is switched off ensures more agile responsiveness and faster acceleration by the engine, even in the warm-up phase.

Fail-safe function in the event of defect of the electrical control circuit

Should the control circuit fail, a fail-safe function ensures that the engine continues to be supplied with coolant: a built-in spiral pressure spring pushes the shutter into the rest position, releasing the impeller for full flow of the coolant and protecting the engine from overheating. To simplify installation in the workshop, Bosch is supplying the new timing-belt kit with switchable water pump. The complete kit also includes the solenoid valve for the switching unit. In addition, ESI[tronic] Evolution from Bosch supports installation of the timing-belt kit with detailed instructions.

Replacing the timing belt regularly prevents consequential damage

The timing belt and any components directly connected to it must be replaced at the intervals specified by the manufacturer, as a torn belt will lead to severe engine damage. ESI[tronic] Evolution provides both the replacement intervals as well as vehicle-specific servicing schedules. And as the connected components are subject to the same wear and tear as the timing belt, Bosch recommends using the complete kits to save time and money when replacing them. In doing so, it’s important to ensure that the tie bolts needed for installing the timing-belt kit are used only once, as multiple uses can lead to material breakage.
