PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Bosch received two 2021 Automotive News PACE Award distinctions for the first series production of SAE Level 2 automated technology for commercial vehicles in the Freightliner New Cascadia. In collaboration with Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) and its Detroit brand, Bosch provided multiple technologies to enable Active Lane Assist, which helps to prevent unintended drifting by actively keeping the vehicle in the center of its lane.

Together Bosch and DTNA received a 2021 Automotive News Innovation Partnership Award recognizing the organizations work together to bring the driver assistance technology to the market. Additionally, Bosch received a 2021 Automotive News PACE Award that recognizes automotive supplier innovation.

“Our goal is technology that supports the reduction of accidents while also improving driver safety and comfort,” said Kevin O’Keefe, regional president of Automotive Steering for Bosch in North America. “The PACE Awards are a validation of the hard work our team put in to be the first-to-market and of the collaboration together with Daimler Trucks North America to bring this life-saving technology to the road.”

Servotwin plus multipurpose camera helps to enable Active Lane Assist

The Active Lane Assist (ALA) function within Detroit Assurance with ABA5 is supported by a combination of Bosch Servotwin® and multipurpose camera. DTNA developed the ALA functionality utilizing Bosch technology and expertise.

The Bosch Servotwin® is an electro-hydraulic steering system that is a key enabler for driver assist functions like lane keeping, lane centering, active pull compensation, return to center and active steering damping. The second generation of the Bosch multipurpose camera provides a robust camera platform for video-based driver assistance systems with a scalable processor concept that enables the system to be optimally configured to the required level of functionality. The ALA system utilizes the multipurpose camera’s lane detection algorithm for vehicle position recognition and prediction within the driving lane. This allows the Servotwin® electro-hydraulic steering system to actively maintain the vehicle position within the lane boundaries.

A Bosch research study found that equipping heavy trucks with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as lateral actuator systems may also significantly reduce the costs of accidents influenced by heavy trucks. The Bosch accident research, titled “Safety + Enhanced Driver Comfort: Steering in Commercial Vehicle ADAS Systems,” finds that lateral actuator systems in Class 7 and 8 trucks can reduce the costs of accidents by up to $0.04 per mile, or $3,700 annually per heavy truck.

Bosch continues rich history in PACE Awards

The 27th annual PACE Awards were presented by Automotive News and the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA). The competition was open to suppliers that contribute products, processes, materials or services directly to the manufacture of cars or trucks. The Automotive News PACE Award is accepted around the world as the industry benchmark for innovation.

Bosch has a rich history of honors in the Automotive News PACE Awards competition. Bosch was a 2020 winner for its advanced rider assistance systems for motorcycles and in 2018 for its integrated connectivity cluster for motorcycles. In 2017, Bosch, Ford Motor Company and TI Automotive were recognized with a PACE Innovation Partnership Award for their collaboration to develop the Port Fuel and Direct Injection System (P-DI). The company has been honored with PACE awards or finalist distinctions for technologies including its laser-drilling technology for spray enhancements in gasoline direct injection, open source-based infotainment system and Long-Range Radar and Vehicle Stability System.
